All About Terminology, a Glossary of Otaku and Hentai Terms

Welcome to our very own Nutaku Glossary of Otaku concepts and hentai terms! A place to find all sorts of helpful and fun information. 

Have you ever had to stop reading a manga or watching an anime because a word was used you did not understand? Did it break your focus or ruin your enjoyment? Did you plan to look that word up and forget because you’re too busy? If the answer is “yes” to any of these things, we understand, we’ve been there too.

After much hard work researching Otaku culture, we compiled a list of frequently used terms. These words and sayings can be found in anime, manga, video games, and you probably guessed it… hentai games and media! 

Since some of the words did not have an obvious meaning, we decided to carefully define them for you in a glossary format. 

Now, all Otaku and non Otaku can rest assured that any confusing terms can be quickly clarified here on our site!

A

Ahegao -Ahegao is the facial expression of pure bliss that females have during sex or orgasming. It’s clearly recognized by redden cheeks, eyes that have rolled back, and a tongue that sticks far out. You know you’re pleasuring her if you see these signs.

Akuma – often referring to a demon or malevolent spirit. Akuma are commonly depicted with flaming features and the ability to fly. If you have seen one, we wish you well, because they are the harbingers of bad news.

Ashikoki – is otherwise known as a footjob. Ashikoki is performed by giving your sexual partner pleasure with your feet. Wearing socks or stockings can be a lovely addition.

 

B

BDSM – BDSM is an acronym and catchall phrase for B/D (Bondage and Discipline), D/s (Dominance and submission), and S/M (Sadism and Masochism). Other sexual practices and erotic behaviors between consenting adults now fall under the category of BDSM too.

Bishoujo – is the term used for a cute and beautiful woman. Often the subject of manga, anime, games, or advertisements. Commonly found in dating sims and visual novels. A good example of a Bishoujo character will have twintails.

Bishounen – is the term for a pretty man who often has androgynous features. In media Bishounen are often very feminine male characters that feature strong martial arts abilities, excellent  talent with sports, great intelligence, flashy fashion, and a good sense of humor.

Bondage – One of the main parts of the BDSM erotic culture is Bondage. Bondage is the practice of binding or restraining a consenting partner for the reason of erotic stimulation. Rope, tape, handcuffs, plastic and more are often used as tools. Sometimes bondage is simply about aesthetics.

 

C

Catgirl – is a female character with feline features, meaning cat ears, a cat tail, whiskers, and fur on an otherwise human body. Catgirls often have cat-like mannerisms too, so do not be surprised if you find one purring. Catgirls are a common character archetype in manga and anime and can be found in many hentai games.

Chibi – a word that is used to describe a style of caricature in Japan. It is otherwise known as super deformation and depicts characters drawn in an overly exaggerated style. Typically, these characters are shown with oversized heads and small, chubby bodies with stubby limbs. This art, which is drawn with very little detail, is often found in anime and manga. You’ve probably seen one of these characters as a sticker on laptop, cell phone, or the back of a car.

Cunnilingus – Oral sex performed on a woman by use of lips, mouth, and tongue. Sexual pleasure is derived from this act; therefore, cunnilingus is performed as foreplay before sex, or as a sexual act itself and can result in orgasm if performed correctly.

Ecchi – The term Ecchi has been adopted by western fans Japanese culture and is used to represent works of anime and manga with sexual overtones. The term is closer to softcore or playful sexuality with a low level of erotism and is used in contrast to the word “hentai” which describes something much more explicit.

Fan Service – Fan Service is the act of intentionally adding material to please the viewers/readers of anime, manga, and hentai. A common act of fan service is the gratuitous shower scene or random upskirt panty shot. The excessive boob jiggle is also known as the Gainax Bounce. Fan service can be found in everyday media and can be a simple throwback, long shot, or episode-long fighting scene. Shipping is considered too.

Femdom – is the shortening of the words female domination/female dominance and is associated (although not always) with dominatrixes (dominatrices). This is when the female takes the role of master in forms of BDSM. If you are looking at a woman in black latex with stiletto heels, you are likely watching a femdom title. Sometimes can also simply define content where the female character is sexually dominant in the relationship with another character.

Futanari – Futanari is the Japanese term for hermaphrodites. A hermaphrodite is someone who possesses both male and female reproductive organs. Most commonly portrayed in hentai content as a person with a female appearance who has both male and female primary sexual genitalia. (For example: breasts, a penis and a vagina all present.)

 

G

Gainaxing – the technique of illustrating girls with huge and often oversized breasts (oppai). When animated the breasts bounce, sway, jiggle and move in ways that defy the laws of gravity and science. At the same time the breasts will move asynchronously, one up and one down or to the side. The exaggerated bounce is often referred to as the Gainax Bounce because it was so frequently used by Gainax Studios.

Gei – Often meaning a performance, art, craft, or accomplishment in the Japanese language. It can also be used for the word gay. In English, we often find gei meaning a martial arts uniform.

 

H

Hardcore – generally meaning extreme or intense. Usually in hentai content hardcore refers to the fact that the material is more explicit and features practices that are “less” vanilla, like anal sex or BDSM practices. It is not limited to sexual descriptions and can also be linked to someone's passion (ex: that person is a hardcore otaku).

Harem Harem is an often-comedic popular genre of light novels, visual novels, manga, anime, and hentai. Harem stories usually find the male protagonist surrounded by female characters who are in love with him or lusting for him. The opposite also exists in has its own term called “reverse harem” where a woman is surrounded by man.

Hentai – a popular genre of pornographic anime. Its literal definition is "depraved" or "abnormal.” Hentai often features overly sexualized characters and graphic and explicit sexual content. Hentai games feature an anime-esque art style that is typical of manga and anime.

 

I

Idol – anime that is focused on pop groups or characters (usually girls) who like to sing and dance all the time. Idols are quite popular in many culture and has become a popular trope for many anime and hentai content. For instance, the light novel Oshi No Ko who follows a popular Idol has recently been adapted to anime and has broken all kinds of record of viewership and ratings!

 

K

Kawaii – pronounced like k-Hawaii, it means something that is cute and or adorable. Also referring to a cuteness culture. Think of things like Hello Kitty when using the term. It can also be used to describe other aesthetics like a certain type of clothing style.              

Kuudere – a chill character who appears calm and collected and seemingly never panics. Kuudere can look emotionless; however, they may be burying their true feelings below the surface. They often have high IQs and talk in a monotone fashion. This is a common archetype in anime, manga, and hentai.

Lewd – Lewd In English, it is a word that describes a subject, act, or remark as sexually vulgar. In Otaku culture, it has transformed slightly to describe things of an erotic nature, such as “lewd” photos or content. This term is often link to Ecchi because of the nature of the activities that are displayed in the anime or manga. The term is also found in multiple hentai games to describe characters who act naughty and enjoy sexuality.

Lewding – refers to two different principles. The first is when artwork oversexualizes an attractive anime/manga character. This normally occurs with female characters but also happens with male characters. The character may be pictured in sexy clothing or with different attributes then they usually are like bigger breasts. The second is lewding of a scene from an anime or manga where instead of what happens normal, characters (who are not usually together) make out or even have sex.

Light Novel – is a form of YA novel that targets high school aged readers. These novels are not very long, normally around 50,000 words total. Dominantly composed of text, they may contain illustrations which are commonly in a manga art style.

 

M

Maid – Maids are women or men who dress like a servant and acts as such. Maids are a popular fetish in Japan and in recent years elsewhere in the world.  Who would not like to be welcomed, “Hello Master,” by a beautiful woman when they come home. 

Maid Café – a category of cosplay restaurants where the waitresses are dressed in maid costumes. They treat the customers as the masters of a private home. These restaurants cater to the master-servant fetish. These fine establishments come from Japan, but are slowly making in other parts of the world.

Manga – Japanese graphic novels that are typically illustrated in black and white. The term “manga” can represent both comics and cartooning and is an extremely popular and lucrative part of the Japanese publishing industry, which has gained worldwide readership.

Mecha – a popular category of manga and anime featuring robots in battle. Mecha covers a wide range of genres from action-adventure, horror, sci-fi and comedy. Mecha is known to provide a kind of fan service called the long shot, allowing viewers to watch and enjoy lengthy battles with lots of attention to the detail of the robots.

MILF – Milf is a popular acronym for Mother I’d Like to Fuck. Used to label attractive older women, it does not matter whether they have children or not. MILF is a popular category of porn and hentai. MILFs are normally depicted with extra-large breasts, greatly submissive, and seemingly craves men.

Moe – a slang word that refers to feelings of excitement, affection, adoration, and devotion experienced regarding characters that appear in anime and manga as well as video games and other media. Characters that elicit feelings like this are sometimes labelled "moe characters."

Monster Girl – Monster Girls is a term use to represent a fictional image of a woman who has similar aesthetic traits as a monster but who also has human features. Monster Girls were first depicted as mean, ugly, and deceitful women who hid their monstrous traits. Now, they are the objects of desire, simply another race, with monstrous attributes that reward them with some sort of superpower they can use to help others. Monster girls are a prominently featured archetype in anime and manga and are oversexualized in monster erotica and hentai. Catgirls, demon girls, slime women or centaurs are only a few popular type you can find in otaku culture.

Mosaic Censorship – a form of censorship in Japan. In 1957 the Supreme Court of Japan saw a case that ended with a new legal interpretation that forced most of the pornography produced in Japan to undergo self-censorship; the primary means of which were digital mosaics placed over genitalia.

 

N

Nagadashi – the Japanese term for creampie, the sexual act of ejaculating inside a woman’s vagina. A popular act in porn and hentai. Also considered a fetish. Sometimes scenes of this nature are viewed in an X-Ray format.

Netorare (NTR) – often used for the person being cuckolded. NTR is when a woman cheats on her significant other while he/they are aware and treats him/them poorly during it. Also considered a fetish.

Netori – often used for the person who is cuckholding another. This person steals a woman from another man. They can be male or female.

 

O

Onee-chan – The term for big sister in Japan.

Onii-chan – The term for big brother in Japan.

Oppai – Oppai is the Japanese term for breasts-boobs-tits! If you’re an Otaku, you probably love oppai.

Otaku - a Japanese word that describes people with common and consuming interests in things like anime, manga, video games, tabletop games and/or computers. Like the English word fanboy, but more highly respected within its culture.

OVA/OAV – Acronym for Original Video Animation or Original Animated Video. In Japan, these are movies or shows that were made specifically for home release. OVA/OAV are broken into episodes and can be short or long formats and originated in the 80s.

 

P

Paizuri – Japanese term for titfuck or titty fucking and often use as sexual foreplay activity. Since "Oppai" characters are very popular in hentai, paizuri is also something that takes place often in the media.

Pettanko – Japanese term for small breast. If Oppai is a very popular concept, there is a large the otaku culture that prefers girls with smaller breasts.

 

S

Senpai – is used in Japan to honor upperclassman, seniors in class, or elders in society. Senpai is also used in martial arts when addressing people of a higher belt level, or more experience than you.

Shibari – a Japanese style of bondage often including the use of ropes. This kind of rope bondage is considered both a kink and an art form. Tight rope bondage can be used for sex, meditation and even as a trust-building practice. It is popular because all types of people can enjoy it.

Shipping – a term created in fandom where fans root for and place two characters into a love relationship. Shipping normally results in unofficial creative works such as fanfiction, doushinji and fan art. Shipping is a common practice for Otaku.

Shōnen-ai – is a term that represents anime and manga that features a male/male romance story. These titles are often referred to as “yaoi,” now.

Squirting - is a slang term used to describe the act of female ejaculation. In hentai, it can be featured by a flood, waterfall, or eruption-like stream from the vagina. While questioned by medical science, many believe this is a real result of orgasm from sex or masturbation.

Stockings – a tight garment that is used to cover the leg from the foot to the knee or the thigh. Stockings are used to increase sexual allure by making the leg look longer and thinner. Stockings can be considered a fetish for the wearer or the person viewing them.

Succubi or Succubus Succubus is a term often used to refer to a female demon who seeks to have sex with sleeping men. In anime, manga, and hentai, these female demons usually seduce men into having sex or feed off or gain strength from sex with men. They can promise men rewards or the reward itself can be the sex.

Tsundere – these stone-cold individuals may look like they have no emotions, but on the inside, they are actually very kind and affectionate. There are many male protagonists like this in anime and manga, but this attribute is mostly given to waifus who refuse any form of kindness from the protagonist but eventually grow to like them. Tsundere are often seen in Harem anime, games or hentai. 

Twintails – a popular hairstyle for anime and manga girls where they have pigtails on both the right and left side of their head. AKA twin braids or double pigtails. Often used to depict characters who are adorable.

Uke – a term that refers to someone who is a bottom in gay relationship.

Visual Novel – is the term for digital interactive fiction. Visual Novels (also called VN) are kind of choose your own adventure style game where the story is told on the screen by a narrative combined with static or animation. The choices made can lead the story into one of multiple directions, therefore several play-throughs will be required to see and experience everything.

Waifu – a Japanese word was drawn from the English word wife. In Japanese Otaku culture, a Waifu is a female character in anime, manga or hentai content that is lovable and found attractive by the community.

 

Y

Yandere – A Yandere refers to someone with a love obsession for someone.  They are a Japanese archetype defined by characters whose love and total devotion is so strong that it is shown as an extreme and sometimes unwanted obsession that includes possessiveness.

Yaoi – simply a term to depict male/male love in hentai, anime, and comics. Yaoi stories are the subject of quite a few doujinshis and hentai games.

Yuri – simply a term to depict female/female love in hentai, anime, and comics. Yuri stories are often adorable and feature deep stories.

 

Z

Zenra – means waifus doing various daily tasks like cooking or working out, while being fully nude. It is often a popular scenario that occurs in multiple visual novels.
